Today is the National Holiday (Observed) for the 4th of July. This holiday brings to mind the word ‘freedom.’ We are all very proud to be an American, pleased that we live in a country that, for all its faults, is still the best place to live in this world.
But I challenge you today to think of freedom from a different perspective. Freedom is one of the perfections, or attributes, of God. It means that He is independent of His creatures and His creation. God is not limited by what we think of Him. The prophet asks in Isaiah 40:13-14 (NIV)
13 Who has understood the mind of the LORD, or instructed him as his counselor?
14 Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way?
Who was it that taught him knowledge or showed him the path of understanding?
The answer is no one. God is not obligated to us in any way, unless He chooses. He does not have to do anything for us unless He chooses to do so. We cannot put Him in our debt. He is free.
He chose to love us.
What an amazing God.
